GM Fails to Fix Impalas

by cammy on July 6, 2011

A recent lawsuit against General Motors Co. claiming the Impala police car’s were treated better than average citizens when correcting an issue with a defective part.

The lawsuit alleges that Impalas from the 2007-2008 have defective spindle rods. This defect can cause the wheels to be misaligned, which can wear the tires out faster. The tires not only wear out faster they can wear out unevenly, which increasing the risk of a blowout.

According to the lawsuit, GM fixed the part on police versions of the Impala but failed to fix the same problem in hundreds of thousands of other Impalas. GM allegedly sent a bulletin to dealers in June 2008 telling them to replace the spindle rods and tires on affected police vehicles. It also authorized dealers to reimburse police who had bought replacement tires. These options were not offered to non-police Impala owners. The company sold a total of 423,000 Impalas from those model years.

So far, 30 drivers have sent complaints about this issue to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While no reports of accident or injury have been reported due to this problem. They do complain of the back of the car swinging out, especially when driving on slick surfaces. NHTSA has not yet opened an investigation into the Impala’s suspension system.
